The shelf has made a comeback for a few years now, thanks to Instagram, and doesn't look like its going away anytime soon. Gone are the dusty books and ornaments collected along the way crammed into ugly books cases and shelves.

Whether it's about carefully placing books in size order or colour combinations its now an art form with people posting their creations on Instagram. Now the shelves themselves are coming in funky shapes and amazing designs with some having individual boxes so you can store not only books but some of your most treasured possessions. They are been artfully displayed with plants, ornaments, candles and photo frames showing the owners lifestyle and demonstrating their styling skills.

The interior designer Emilio Pimentel-Reid says, “A great shelfie is an alternative self-portrait and can be much more nuanced and reflective of your taste, interests and personality”.

This is true you can often get a glimpse of a person's lifestyle and character from what is on show.

Being a shelf addict myself I am constantly changing objects around and changing my colour schemes with the seasons. It was music to my ears when I found out that maximalism is taking over from minimalism. I don’t feel the slightest bit guilty adding more and more to my collection.

Shelves have become an art form where “displayed stuff” really does begin to tell the story of a person’s interests or social standing. Rumour has it that many people invest in shelving units with the real aim being to impress on social media #shelfie. Whether you have a few or many possessions it is all about how you present them that is visually appealing. Items should be strategically placed, vases grouped in three, no clutter and books lined up neatly, the more artistic the better. Instagram is currently displaying thousands of images depicting people’s lifestyles from botanical displays to jars of dried food, herbs and spices and huge book displays. In some kitchens, minimalism has gone completely and wall cabinets have been replaced by shelves which display only the best china!

Adding shelving is a great way of bringing a new dimension to any space. It certainly gives a room character making it a feature wall.  It also makes a room more lived in rather than some looking like a show home.

We don’t always need to spend a lot of money filling our shelves. Choose a colour scheme and group things, that you already have, together. Add into the mix a plant, a couple of books and you have a display a #shelfie! It’s very therapeutic and fun to do as well.

So, if you’re seeking social media attention or just want to create a nice space, get collections out of cupboards and show off your most treasured possessions.
